Grumbleweed's Farm

Today, in 2009, Grumbleweed Farm is complete and functional. We raise polled Hereford cattle and operate a farm stand on site. Our cattle are treated with loving care and respect. Our vegetable products are of highest quality and among the safest found anywhere.

About Grumbleweed Farm

Grumbleweed Farm is located at 329 North Road, Jefferson, New Hampshire. This piece of land was part of the original Kings Grants and was first built on by William Chamberlain in 1809. For more on the early history refer to "Jefferson New Hampshire before 1996."

After only a few changes of ownership beyond the Chamberlain family, Stuart and Mary Hotchkiss purchased the property consisting of 51 acres in 2001. A plan was constructed to remove the existing buildings (which were beyond repair) and build what was needed for a home, construction business, and multifunction farm.

Grumbleweed Farm Stand

Vegetable produce growing and sales are managed by Mary Hotchkiss. She started her work on a commercial level in 2005 with the Lancaster Farmers Market as her only point of sale and quickly realized that sales would be more easily conducted at the farm allowing more efficient use of time. She started with tables in the open air with no building and was met with strong encouragment to move forward with something bigger. 2006 brought the construction of the current farm stand and a successful year despite bad spring weather.

Mary is dedicated to delivering top quality, locally grown products at a fair price. Though not organic certified, she does her best not to use pesticides or chemical fertilizers. The soil is built and maintained with manure and lime.

Registered Hereford Cattle

Beef cattle management and daily care are the responsibility of Stuart Hotchkiss. Both Stuart and Mary have a love of animals and farming. It is their belief that no matter what purpose an animal has on a farm, it must be cared for well.

Our breeding cattle and beef will only be offered to the customer in its best condition. The cattle are fed on pasture grass, hay, and organic certified grain depending on the time of year.

The farm sells both live heifers for breeding and shares in steers grown for beef. A share means that you purchase a portion of a steer (1/2, 1/4, etc.) for your own consumption.
