A word regarding industry reputation and
how our clients feel about us from Hotchkiss Construction Services owner and
manager Stuart Hotchkiss.
Generally, and in particular the area we do
business in, the construction industry has earned a poor reputation for lack of
trust and delivering substandard work. After being burned myself in the initial
construction of our facilities, I made it top priority that our company stand
out as a leader in every area of the business. This has been instilled in our
employees who have eagerly taken it on board. We have a proud respectful group
that delivers day in and day out. They understand what we do today will
determine tomorrow's outcome. It pleases me our clients can equally respect the
management and employees of Hotchkiss Construction Services LLC.
The following are excerpts from a couple customer
opinions we have received:
Hotchkiss Construction Services has undertaken a
number of projects, big and small for us. The largest was a barn where the site
called for design ingenuity. Hotchkiss solved the problems and had the building
in place in excellent time and, I might add, a minimum waste of materials. The
cost was realistic and the end product to our complete
satisfaction.
The smaller projects have also demonstrated
Hotchkiss’ ability to deal with and the address the problems inherent in
retrofitting an old house. The job has always been completed to our
satisfaction. We will be undoubtedly be calling on Stu and his crew in the
future.

"Stu Hotchkiss has built something special for his
clients in the North Country. He has assembled a team of employees who share (a
requirement) his remarkable integrity, honesty, attention to detail, and
positive outlook on life. Stu additionally asks his employees to use creativity
in solving problems or preventing future problems. In the work performed for me,
many unique and complicated situations were faced where Stu and his team came up
with novel solutions resulting in an excellent outcome. An example is the use of
a rubber floor covering to replace a very problematic deck canvas on the porch.
In addition, Stu himself is a master builder, woodworker, landscaper, roofer,
painter, lumberjack, and more. His team brings a variety of useful skills to the
mix as well.
Ability to work everyday:
Hotchkiss Construction Services has the unique ability to move work from the job
site to his fully equipped shop where work continues during inclement weather or
other job site disruptions (like homeowners need for the house).
Accountability: Every contractor
should be accountable for their work. Many are not (this is baffling). Hotchkiss
Construction Services absolutely takes full responsibility for work performed
and delivered to the specifications agreed upon with homeowner/client. On
several occasions in my job, additional work was done to either make something
"right" or done a second time to meet Stu's expectations. In these cases, I was
not charged for the rework. It didn't take me long to realize Stu's requirement
for excellent work exceeded mine.
Staying on the job: It is a
constant challenge for building contractors to stay on your job and meet your
timelines while waiting for materials to arrive, subcontractors to finish work,
or trying to align future work for different clients. Stu Hotchkiss completely
understands this challenge. The way he handles this is through open
communication with the client. This can be risky as some clients cannot tolerate
less than 100% attention on their job even if everyone is waiting on a shipment,
an electrician, or the weather to clear. But Stu speaks directly to the client
on these matters and that is the right thing to do. In my case, Stu asked me if
I would postpone part of my project so he could take on another job. I told him
I preferred he not postpone my work and that I was concerned that he might not
get back to my job in a timely manner. He decided immediately to postpone the
other project and stay focused on mine. I think that level of communication and
candor is unusual, remarkable, and very professional.
Overall: I trusted my historic
house to Stu Hotchkiss and his team. The work was complicated and took longer
than we expected (typical for a 100 year old home). But the work was done very
well and the costs were directly in line with the work performed. The Hotchkiss
team is friendly, positive, and talented. They can solve any problem. Their
solutions are always appropriate for the house whether it be historic, new
construction, or general repair. I recommend Hotchkiss Construction Services
without reservation and have every expectation of continuing to work with Stu
and his team in the years ahead."
